Medical Appointments

It is an expectation that family members provide residents with transportation to medical appointments to the extent possible. If a resident is independently mobile, arrangements can be made for HandyDart or taxi service to attend an appointment.

Residents may need to be accompanied to outside scheduled medical appointments. Residents must be accompanied when attending a hospital for a special test or procedure. Therefore, staff will have to arrange for a paid companion if a family member is not available. The costs for transportation and companion services are a resident's responsibility and can be charged to the comfort account.

If a resident is an eligible veteran, Veterans Affairs Canada will pay some of the transportation and companionship charges when an outside medical appointment is required. Veterans Affairs Canada will reimburse the following:

  • Driver and transport fees for volunteer drivers when a family member is not available;
  • Escort fees up to a maximum of $40.24 for less than four (4) hours and $80.48 for more than four(4) hours;

All transport and escort receipts must be submitted to the receptionist for reimbursement by Veterans Affairs Canada.
Residents are responsible for any additional transport and escort fees.

Regular Transportation

Residents have several options if wanting to go out to the community independently. Residents may apply for and obtain a monthly HandyCard and receive transport vouchers. The Social Workers can assist with applying for a pass.

A direct access telephone to a taxi service is located in the Gift Shop area. The taxi company must be advised if a wheelchair accessible taxi is required.

There are several bus routes directly outside of George Derby Centre. The bus travels to areas in Burnaby, Coquitlam, New Westminster and Port Moody. Please contact TransLink for detailed information about the nearby bus routes and a bus schedule.
