George Derby Centre offers many recreation and leisure programs for our residents’ enjoyment. Although participation in the recreation and leisure program is not compulsory we do encourage residents to participate. Each activity will provide an opportunity for socialization, physical fitness, creativity and accomplishment and will promote a sense of well being.
We encourage residents to take advantage of the many programs that are available and staff will be pleased to assist with selections.
Activity & Leisure Programs
 The activity program includes a variety of social and recreation events that take place at George Derby Centre or in the community. The Recreation staff will post and provide a monthly calendar of events and programs that will be taking place on each living unit and in the Town Hall. The activity calendars are also available at the reception desk for the benefit of family members and friends. Examples of the recreation activities include:
Scheduled Community Outings
- Weekly shopping trips to the local malls
- Scenic trips
- Restaurant outings
- Planned outings to service organizations
Special Events
The recreation staff plans monthly outings to areas and events in and around the Lower Mainland. On many occasions, the community outings involve adventures to other destinations of interest. Please discuss your wish to participate in an outing with the activity staff since there is a charge for some of the special trips and entertainment events.
In-House Activities 
Regular recreation programs are planned in consultation with the residents and are intended to meet a wide variety of needs and interests. They include:
- A daily exercise program held in the Town Hall
- Birthday celebrations
- Celebrations to recognize special holidays
- Gardening programs
- Bingo and pub social
- Arts and crafts
- Reading and discussion groups
- Entertainment events
- Weekly family social.
Music Program
The music program offers many hours of enjoyment for our residents regardless of their musical ability and interests.  The Music Therapist conducts regular group programs and leads the George Derby Combo Band, choir and the Bell Chime group. The music therapist also conducts individual and small group music sessions.We encourage residents to participate in the music therapy program since it provides a sense of accomplishment, comfort and expression. Residents are also encouraged to use the piano located in the lounge on each resident living unit. The monthly activity calendar provides information about the scheduled music programs.
Pet Visiting Program
George Derby Centre has a pet visiting program for our residents' enjoyment. In addition, the Centre is honoured to support our resident dog, Ebony. Ebony comes to George Derby Centre with one of our Resident Care Aides who ensures Ebony’s health and happiness. Ebony loves our residents and seeks their companionship. Some residents may take her for a walk or just spend a few enjoyable moments with her.
Family members and friends are most welcome to bring in their domestic pets to visit whenever it is convenient. We advise that all pets stay on a leash if they are difficult to handle or uncomfortable around large numbers of people or other animals.
