Nursing Services

George Derby Centre ensures that our residents have access to the services of Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses 24 hours per day. The professional nursing staff are responsible for conducting ongoing health assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of resident care and treatment plan, administer medications, identify and respond to changing health and care needs, communicate with physicians and family members and make referrals to other professional services.

Qualified Resident Care Aides are also on staff 24 hours per day to assist  with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, personal care and meal service.

The care staff is committed to our residents' well-being and comfort. The care staff work as a team to assist residents with activities of daily living and to meet health and personal needs.

Nutrition Services
The Dietitian is responsible for addressing nutritional and special dietary needs. Upon admission, the Dietitian conducts a nutritional assessment to obtain information regarding the nutritional history and habits, determine food preferences and identify any known food allergies or food intolerances.

The Dietitian also works to determine the need for a special diet or supplements to maintain or improve health status. The Dietitian is always available for consultation regarding dietary needs or provide individual counselling as necessary.

Occupational Therapy

The Occupational Therapist will assess mobility and functional ability and identify any equipment that may be needed to maintain independence. The Occupational Therapist also works with Veterans Affairs Canada to ensure that residents are provided with the right mobility aides and specialized equipment. The Occupational Therapist will monitor any changing equipment needs and arrange for any necessary equipment repairs.

The Occupational Therapist is also responsible for assessing individual program needs, conducting walking and other strengthening programs and assisting with special activities such as swallowing assessments.

Social Work Services

The Social Workers provide support to our residents and their family members and friends. The role of the Social Worker is to focus on our residents social, emotional and financial issues and concerns and to support relocation and adjustment to George Derby Centre. The social workers also coordinate all resident admissions and discharges and can provide valuable information regarding available community resources.

The Social Workers will work closely with residents and family members to ensure that personal needs are met. They advocate on behalf of our residents, provide support to family members through times of loss, make referrals to community agencies, arrange for clothing purchases and promote a strong connection with the community.

Spiritual Wellness

The role of the Spiritual Care Coordinator is to provide residents and their family members with spiritual support and to conduct individual visits and counselling sessions. The Coordinator also conducts regular group programs to promote a spiritual well-being. Examples of these programs include life review and achieving inner peace and we encourage our residents to participate.

The Spiritual Care Coordinator is responsible for working with the different religious denominations to ensure access to the church of choice. The Coordinator is also responsible for organizing the Roman Catholic Mass and Protestant Service that are held at George Derby Centre every Sunday.
The Spiritual Care Coordinator plans and leads special non-ecumenical services in honour of our Veterans. They include a monthly memorial service, the annual Remembrance Day Service and other commemorative events and celebrations.
