The activity staff and a volunteer accompany residents on the shopping trip and assists as required.

Residents may also purchase personal items in the gift shop and the volunteers readily assist with some minor purchases if a resident cannot go out on shopping trips.

Social Leave

We encourage our residents to remain connected to their friends and the community. Many residents go out with their family and friends for several hours to enjoy meals, visits and entertainment events. Some residents may even spend overnight with their family members. Residents may go out on social leave for a maximum of three (3) days each time. Leave beyond three consecutive days is considered to be vacation time in accordance with the Provincial Long Term Care Program.

It is important that nursing staff is provided with two (2) days notice of a social outing to ensure enough time to prepare social leave medications.

Residents are also required to sign out in the social leave registry before leaving the Centre and upon return. It is very important that staff can account for each resident in the event of a disaster or if there is an unexpect illness while away from the Centre. In addition, staff is responsible for regularly accounting for each resident in the event that a resident becomes lost and at risk in the community.

Vacation Time

In accordance with the Provincial Long Term Care Program, our residents are entitled to take a maximum of 30 vacation days each year without having to give up their residency at George Derby Centre. Annual entitled vacation time does not include social leaves of three (3) days that may have taken throughout the year.

The nursing staff must be provided with at least five (5) days notice prior to the first day of your planned vacation. The nursing staff requires this notice period so that the Pharmacist can be notified and prepare medications for use during the vacation.

Veterans Affairs Canada Area Counselor

Veterans Affairs Canada ensures that our veteran residents have access to an experienced counsellor on a monthly basis. The Counsellor is available to assist with any concerns regarding pensionable benefits from Veterans Affairs Canada. We encourage family members and friends to maintain contact and visit as often as possible. There are no restrictions on visiting hours. However, we request that family members and friends visit from 9:00am and 9:00pm. A visitor will be required to leave if they are disturbing our residents.

The front doors at the main entrance are locked from 8:00pm to 7:00am each day. At all other times, residents will have to proceed to the Night Entrance for staff to authorize entry to the Centre.
