George Derby Centre is committed to supporting the active involvement of our residents, their family members and friends and our community volunteers. Therefore, we maintain formal mechanisms to seek your active participation in life at George Derby Centre.
Resident Care Conferences
Every resident has an individual care plan that identifies their strengths, care and treatment needs and leisure interests. Staff conduct a formal care conference following admission and at least annually to ensure that needs and interests are met and included in the care plan. We encourage residents and family members to participate in all scheduled care conferences. The purpose of a care conference is to allow the care team and support services staff to review the care and service needs and to identify how we can meet them. A care conference also provides residents and family members with an opportunity to obtain information about specific concerns, provide input into care planning and to ask questions. The Resident Care Manager or Social Worker is available if there are any questions about the process.
Families and Friends
George Derby Centre believes that our residents’ family members and friends are a vital part of our community. We believe that our residents thrive and remain interested in life when they receive regular visits from family members and friends. We recognize that family members and friends provide a valuable contribution to our residents' well-being since they share in a history, interests and know likes and dislikes. Family members and friends can also advocate on behalf of a resident and be aware of concerns that a resident may be unable to discuss with the care staff. Family members also provide staff with important information and make suggestions that will assist with care. It is important that staff are provided with a family members’ current telephone number and address so that they may be contacted as necessary.
Family Council
The role of the Family Council is to work collaboratively with management and staff toward enhancement of the residents’ quality of life, well-being and happiness. The Family Council also provides feedback regarding resident care, programs and services and is invited to participate in quality improvement projects. The minutes of all family Council meetings are posted for information on a designated bulletin board on Main Street. George Derby Centre values the input and support of our family members and residents are encouraged to join the Family Council. Please contact the Social Worker for more information about the Family Council.
Family Support Group
The monthly Family Support Group is facilitated by the Social Workers. The purpose of the Family Support Group is to provide family members with emotional support, education about elder care, information about the Centre’s programs and services and opportunities for communicating with other family members.
Resident's Council
The Residents’ Council is comprised of resident representatives of the general resident living areas and family representatives of the Special Care Unit. The Residents’ Council provides a forum for input and communication with Administration on matters of interest to all residents. Representatives of the Residents’ Council also formally welcome our new residents and participate in the scheduled Activity Forums and the Food advisory Committee. The minutes of the Residents’ Council meetings are posted for information on a designated bulletin board on each living unit and in the Gift Shop area. George Derby Centre values the residents' input and participation and residents are encouraged to join the Residents’ Council. Please contact the Thereapeutic Program Leader, for more information about the Residents’ Council.
Volunteers
George Derby Centre is fortunate to have the active involvement and support of our volunteers. The George Derby Volunteer Society coordinates the provision of many services for our residents’ benefit. The volunteers are responsible for operating the gift Shop and use all proceeds for the direct benefit of our residents. They also devote many hours to assist with resident activities, outings and events and provide our residents with seamstress and transportation services, companionship time and enjoyment. Representatives of the many veteran service organizations regularly visit our residents and encourage them to remain connected by inviting them to community functions. The veteran service organizations also provide George Derby Centre with significant financial contributions that allow for the purchase of many special amenities that enhance our residents’ quality of life. Please contact the Coordinator of Volunteer Services if interested in becoming a volunteer at George Derby Centre.
