GentleCare is a revolutionary, unique and different approach to the care of people who are aging and is a powerful guide to change the way we care for our elders. Building on its long history of caring for veterans, George Derby Centre is undertaking the comprehensive task of introducing the concept of the GentleCare “Prosthesis of Care” for each veteran. Three important elements, People, Physical Space and Programs are used to design a support system for each resident. This unique care system will protect and maintain the resident’s strengths and skills, and compensate for their deficits so each resident can function at maximum capacity. GentleCare introduces a range of specifically designed interactions, including modified or relaxed breakfasts, designed activities, bath teams and relaxing bathing opportunities, walking and exercise programs, sharing meals and activities with families, pet therapy, and intergenerational activity. These strategies support our efforts to make George Derby Centre home for our veterans and to help them enjoy life despite personal disabilities. GentleCare also advocates a therapeutic partnership with families and encourages our family members to participate on quality improvement teams and councils. Community volunteers and organizations, especially the Royal Canadian Legions and Ladies Auxiliaries, work with staff to normalize life for our veterans. George Derby Centre is extremely fortunate that Veterans Affairs Canada is supportive of our direction to provide enhanced programs and services to our Veteran residents. We strive to promote staff education that ensures our staff can meet the increasingly complex care needs of our residents. We are excited that Veterans Affairs Canada has fully funded participation in the GentleCare Program. Staff attending GentleCare education sessions are “Making Change Happen” and implementing the GentleCare philosophy into their daily work routines. We recognize that many of the difficulties identified within a continuing care setting can be addressed and minimized by applying the principles of GentleCare. Opportunities are available for staff to participate in many GentleCare initiatives to enhance our environment. It is an exciting and challenging frontier that will significantly impact how care is provided to our residents. |
