Monthly Rent

The Province of British Columbia requires that all residents living in a continuing care facility pay an established monthly rent. Therefore, all residents or the person managing the resident’s finances are responsible for payment of the monthly rent by the first day of each month.

Residents are encouraged to speak to our Finance Department to make the monthly rental payment as convenient as possible. Several options are available and may include automatic pre-authorized payments made by a banking institution or post dated cheques provided directly to George Derby Centre.

Personal Comfort Account

George Derby Centre maintains individual comfort accounts in trust for our residents' convenience and at no additional cost for the service. The personal comfort account provides safe and convenient access to funds, when required. Residents may also use the the comfort account to purchase products, charge for items from the gift shop, participate in pub socials and outings and pay for other personal services. We suggest a balance of $200.00 be held in the comfort account and additional funds be maintained in a bank of choice. A monthly transaction record of deposits and withdrawals will be provided upon request.

The Receptionist maintains the comfort accounts and funds can be withdrawn daily between 9:00-11:30am, except on statutory holidays. The receptionist also processes deposits made by family members during regular business hours. After regular business hours, family members may place money and payments in a sealed envelope and deposit it into a secure internal mail box located beside the reception desk.

When a resident is discharged, George Derby Centre retains the comfort account funds for a 45 day period to ensure that all transactions may be finalized prior to the comfort account being closed.

Income Security: Married Couples

Married couples who are separated when a spouse is admitted to George Derby Centre may be eligible for financial assistance due to “involuntary separation”. We suggest that Income Security be contacted at 1-800-277-9914 regarding possible eligibility for increased benefits. Some low income couples may also be entitled to claim two single person’s old age security rates as opposed to the married pension rate.
